Saint Bartholomew’s parish dates from 1770 when the Governor and Council met to name Chatham County. In the days of the American Revolution the formation of an Anglican church was postponed.
Beginning in 1821, a group of people from the Lower Cape Fear who "summered" here and became permanent residents sought to build a local Episcopal church. In 1831 a contract was signed to build such a church. The cornerstone was laid in 1832 and the first services were held in December 1832. St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church was formally consecrated in June 9, 1833 by Bishop Ives.
The 1833 church building is still in use today. The original exterior was wood framed and this was later enclosed in brick and some enlarging has been done here and here. The interior is substantially the same in look and feel as it was in the 19th century. Several nationally prominent people are buried in the churchyard cemetery.
