While the obelisk itself is in good shape, the rest of the memorial to Alabama war veterans in the Veteran's Courtyard has suffered from the hands of vandals. The pedestals for eight monuments are still there, but the statues that used to stand on them have been moved to a spot under the Alabama Capitol (see WMDVXY, Statues Under the Alabama Capitol - Montgomery, Alabama). The American Legion has placed planters on the pedestals, which still have their dedicatory words.
The obelisk and courtyard are open to the public. My hope is that people will visit to remember those who served and, in doing so, state with their actions that those who have the freedom to do such damage cannot defeat our honoring of those who have served our nation. The memorial can be seen from the street, but the times I have been there, the gates have been open.
