The tomb of Tutankhamun (1341 BCE - 1323 BCE) in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt, was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter. Although broken into and robbed shortly after it was sealed it contained a vast treasure valued at 50 billion dollars (2010 dollars). The golden mask which covered the head of his mummy, now in the Egyptian museum, is considered to be the single most valuable item in any museum. Carter's meticulous care in documenting and removing the items from the tomb took nearly ten years.
Tutankhamun's mummy has remained in the tomb, removed only briefly for CT scans in 2005. The CT scanner was brought to The Valley of the Kings to minimize the time the mummy was exposed to the outside environment.
The Tomb was closed to the public in 2010 for restoration, and it is not known if, or when it will reopen. At the time of my visit in 2004 there was a fee to enter the Valley of the Kings, and and a separate fee for the tomb.
