In 1999, Tempe, Arizona converted a portion of the Salt River into a large recreational and commercial development, including a two-mile lake created through the use of inflatable rubber dams. In order to keep users of the lake safe from flash floods, high winds, and lightning, the Tempe Town Lake Emergency Warning System was created. The system combines weather information, weather sensors, communications equipment, visual warnings, and public education to help lake users assess their personal safety and respond accordingly.
Three of these towers are mounted around Town Lake. Each tower contains warning sirens and strobe beacons. Under high wind conditions, two white strobes will flash - the higher the wind speed, the greater the frequency of the flashing. If lightning is detected within ten miles, a yellow strobe is activated. In the event of evacuation, the sirens go off and the red light is activated and remains active until the lake is re-opened.
