Heiliger Stein is a Celtic Holy stone which was said to have been moved from a Celtic Settling 30 km away by a Hermit.
Water gathers in the hollows of the stone and is said to have healing powers.
A church was built at the site and many pilgrims ventured to the holy place.
The stone was to have been destroyed in the early 18th Century due to "superstitious" use but was saved by petition.
The church was destroyed in 1784.
In 1995 the foundations of the church was discovered and restored.
In 1999 an eliptical observation track was constructed to better view the excavations and excellent views of the nearby vineyards and villages.
The Heiliger Stone is located by Mitterretzbach just 275 m from the Czech border.
