Phayao City is one of the many provincial capitals of northern Thailand. A pleasant city, the Buddhist bible belt, located on the pleasant shores of Phayao Lake, giving the city a pleasant, middle class, wholesome, environment. On the border with Laos.
There are approximately twenty thousand people in the city, with half a million in the province, making it one of the less populous provinces. The city has the usual range of facilities and services, and is a quiet place to visit. A tiny smattering of the odd tourist wanders through.
Near the city centre is the City Hall. The building has no English language signage. It looks to be of some age, but is well maintained. Two floors, filled with filing cabinets and busy people. I happened to visit in the early morning, when the emergency service people stood to attention when the Thai national anthem was broadcast.
