This monument was dedicated to the Ukrainian people that settled in Canada over 100 years ago. There is a significant Ukrainian population in the area of Edmonton, Alberta.

This monument sits to the northwest of Alberta’s Legislature Building was designed by provincial architect Allan Merrick Jeffers. The building was designed in the popular Beaux Arts style. This style is evident in the design of the Legislature Building: the T-shaped floor plan; the building’s entrance, or portico, supported by massive columns; the dome rising above a spacious rotunda.
The monument is located to the west of the large refelecting pool, a favourite of photographers and young and old that like to wade in the cool waters on a hot summer day. There are many monuments and sculptures throughout the grounds of the legislature, this monument is dedicated to the arrival of Ukrainians to the area that would become the province of in 1891.

The Ukrainian Centennial Pioneer Monument
This monument commemoriates the arrival in 1891 of the first Ukrainian settlers in Canada. It pays tribute to the stalwart sons and daughters of the soil who, through patient industry and steadfast courage, overcame physical hardships and adversity to transform the vastness of the prairie into productive farm land. In helping to unleash the economic potential of the Canadian west, Ukrainian pioneers not only contributed to the subsequent founding of the province of Alberta, but bequeathed a proud legacy to them perseverance and self sacrifice are an inspiration and a challenge to us all.
the tableaux in this triptych depict the achievements of the past and the rich cultural inheritance of contemporary Ukrainian Canadians as they look to the future with a renewed sense of purpose. A time capsule beneath this marker contains donors documents and greetings which will be opened at the bicentennial celebration of Ukrainian settlement in Canada in the year 2091.
