As the Appalachian Trail wanders through the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, it provides a number of opportunities for day hikers since it passes through a number of towns. Long-distance hikers also utilize these towns to re-supply and pick up mail.
South to north hikers pass through the town of Dalton then travel along Gulf Road before re-entering the Chalet State Wildlife Management Area at this trailhead. The trailhead has an informational kiosk which doubles as a message center. The area around the trailhead has parking spaces for several cars.
