The pool became a summer paradise for 75-100 children from the town and surrounding communities. To meet the requirements of the State Health Department it was drained 3 times each week. Four hundred gallons of fresh water was required for each swimmer.
Early swimmers wore a one-piece wool suit. The old wooden stalls were used for changing clothes. Swimming contests were held, much like the contest of today.
The first Toppenish city pool was located at the corner of North A Street and Lincoln Ave. It was built in 1935-36 and was 50’ by 100’.
In the 1950’s a larger pool was built on the same site, then the late 1980’s an Olympic sized pool was constructed.
This mural, painted in one day by a dozen artists, depicts the family fun enjoyed in those days. It is on the site of the Toppenish’s 50 meter Pool Building on Lincoln Ave & North A Street. Lead artist was Roger Cooke.
