Sargeant Methodist Church Bell - Sargeant, Minnesota - posted by saopaulo1

Since 1973, all incorporated towns were declared officially to be ‘cities’ by an act of the Minnesota Legislature. Ever wonder about those ‘little cities’? This series of 100 waymarks will take you to all corners of the great state of Minnesota to visit the 100 smallest of the incorporated cities in the state. All have a great story to tell.
This is the 70th of 100 of the cities described in the book LITTLE MINNESOTA. Founded in 1876, Sargeant was incorporated in 1900 and is currently home to 61 persons. The town is named for Harry A. Sargeant, a native of Quebec, Canada who settled in the area in 1865 and organized Sargeant Township in 1873.
One of the few banks in Little Minnesota to survive the 1933 Bank Holiday was the State Bank of Sargeant. However, on May 17, 1939, one of the more sensational events to ever occur in Mower County happened when the ‘Cream Can Bandits’ attempted to rob the bank. The robbery and the capture of the robbers made national news and even pushed a scheduled visit by the King & Queen of England to second page status in the Austin Daily Herald.
The Pleasant Valley Wind Farm Project scheduled to be built near Sargeant will produce over a million megawatt hours per year.
This series of waymarks is tuned to getting people to visit these wonderful small communities before they disappear completely. To validate your ‘find’, please post a photo of you with your GPS at the coordinates and please relate a little tidbit about what you learned about the town and its people that is not in this narrative or the book.
