Not a great deal is readily available, in English, concerning King Ngam Mung the Great. To summarise, in the 13th century the Thai people were settling what is now northern Thailand. There was ongoing squabbling between the various Thai cities, and squabbles with the regional powers of Burma and Cambodia. Out of this confusion several Thai Kings emerged, who brought a measure of order to this situation. King Ngam Mung was one of these Kings. He established, or at least reorganised the city and territory of Phayao, and formed alliances with neighbouring Thai states.

The statue of the King stands on a tall, ~3m high, square and solid plinth, which in turn rests on a dais, in a city park, on the shores of Lake Phayao, near the city centre. The statue itself is life-sized, and depicts the King standing, gazing outwards towards the Lake. The King wears then contemporary civilian dress, a crown-like headdress, and has a sheafed sword in his right hand.

There are a regular set of ceremonies held here every year, and, as the statue is covered with bunting, it seems that there had been a recent ceremony.
