The 'Sterrewacht Leiden' was erected in 1633, originally located on the roof of the Academy building. In 1861 a new and larger observatory was build on the premises of the Hortus Botanicus.
In 1974 the observatory was moved to the Huygens Laboratory and since 1997 is located in the new J.H. Oort building, all in Leiden.
The building is currently called the 'Oude Sterrewacht'(old observatory) and was recently renovated.
It can be visited as part of a visit of the Old Hortus Botanicus.
Visit Instructions:Note the time of day of your visit, and your own photo of your favorite part of the observatory. This might be the view from the observatory, picture of your favorite building or favorite exhibit. (Be mindful of flash photography rules!)
