The tree was formerly in the Termeil State Forest but a section of land surrounding the tree was handed over to the National Parks to ensure its preservation.
The National Register of Big Trees (
visit link) gives the measurements of Old Blotchy. The register uses the same techniques as the Native Tree Society U.S.A. The tree's crown is 98 feet above its base & as with gum trees, there are no lower branches.
Old Blotchy is accessed via a four wheel drive track named 18 Mile Peg Road which branches off the Princes Highway just after passing through the locality of Termeil. The turn off is well sign posted & it is only about 5 minutes drive to the parking area.
There is a well worn, easy grade walking track leading off from the car park which passes through thick scrub & it is only when you emerge that this amazing tree towers above you.
The tallest Spotted Gum (Big Spotty) is about 7 kilometres (4 miles) to the west but its location is not public knowledge.
