The Bridget Graffort House
"The original house on this site was the home of Bridget Graffort, daughter of Capt. Richard Cutt and niece of John Cutt, first President of the Province of New Hampshire. In 1700, the widow Graffort gave to the Town of Portsmouth, her birthplace, a strip of land running from Market Square to the Piscataqua River first known as Grafforts Lane - now Daniel Street.
She also gave a lot of land in her "Great Field" for erecting a school house. The Graffort Club, first Woman's Club in Portsmouth and named for Bridget Graffort, the first public spirited woman in Portsmouth, erects this plaque to mark this historic site."
