This Carnegie Public Library was one of 65 that were built in Minnesota between 1899 and 1917 with funds from Andrew Carnegie and the Carnegie Corporation. Built in 1914, this library was dedicated on May 12, 1915. In the late 1960's, the library moved to a new building and since then, this original location has housed several organizations in the community but it is currently vacant and undergoing a major restoration.
~ from the Historic Carnegie Library Restoration website (visit link) Nearly 100 years ago, philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, believing in real and permanent good, offered the City of Thief River Falls the sum of $12,500 to build a public library. The City met Mr. Carnegie’s requirements by matching this with $4,848 in local funding and built the stately Carnegie Library Building that still stands at the corner of Main Avenue and 1st Street.
It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
