Sara Carter was born in Scott County, Virginia and was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Dougherty. She married Alvin Pleasant (A.P.) Carter and along with Mother Maybelle Carter the three were among the early pioneers of Country Music. The Original Carter Family were a vital part of the 1927 recording sessions conducted by Ralph Peer in Bristol, Tennessee. The famed “Bristol Sessions” gave birth to country music and Bristol is today known as “The Birth Place of Country Music, thanks to the likes of “The Stoneman’s, Jimmy Rodgers and the Carter Family. The Original Carter Family disbanded in 1940 when Sara and A. P. divorced. Sara later married Coy Bayes and moved to California where Sara relished her privacy, letting others promote and continue the legacy of the Carter Family. Sara Carter, A. P. and Mother Maybelle were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970. Sara Carter died quietly on January 8, 1979 and is resting with other members of the Carter Family in the Mt. Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery in Hiltons, Virginia.

Description:
Sara Carter was born on July 21, 1898 in Scott County, Virginia. On June 18, 1915 she married Alvin Pleasant (A.P.) Carter. Sara, A.P. and Mother Maybelle Carter began performing in the area around their native Scott County and in 1927 the trio traveled from Maces Springs, Virginia to Bristol, Tennessee and made their first recording for record producer Ralph Peer. This was known as “The Bristol Sessions” which many people call the Birth of County Music, and made household names out of the Original Carter Family. Sara and A. P. had three children, Gladys, Janette and Joe, all of whom continued to live in their native Scott County. Sara and A. P. divorced in 1939 and she later married Coy Bayes and moved to California and seldom performed. She did reunite with Maybelle in the 1960’s where the two recorded a couple of albums. The Original Carter Family (Sara, A. P. & Maybelle) were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970 and into the Bluegrass Hall of Honor in 2001. Sara Carter died on January 8, 1979 and is buried in the Mt. Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery in Hiltons, Virginia.
