The rotunda was donated by the family of Arthur Edward Baker who served the City of Wollongong for 50 years from 1933 to 1983. It was reconstructed to the specifications of the original built in 1896 on the same site.

The original was built to commenorate the centenary of the Illawarra marking the landing in the district of the first Europeans Bass & Flinders on 26 March 1796. The original plaque is affixed to its replacement.
