Chiricahua National Monument is located approximately 36 miles southeast of Willcox, Arizona in the Chiricahua Mountains. The monument preserves the remains of a volcanic eruption that occurred 27 million years ago. The rocks in the area were deposited as glowing hot ash that solidified to form welded tuff. The mountains were then tilted at a later date. Stresses from this activity formed deep vertical cracks called joints in the tuff. This allowed rainwater, ice, and plant roots to penetrate the rock, forcing it apart, and allowing the rock to be eroded. Over time, immense spires resulted from the weathering and erosion along the joints. The national monument was established April 18, 1924 to preserve these rock formations. While many of the rock formations are visible from the road leading into the monument, the best views of the formations is along an 8.5 mile loop that takes visitors through canyons and mesas surrounded by the formations.
