Team Blakelylaw noticed this mural while they were chowing down at Sid's Diner, one of El Reno's notable restaurant landmarks. It is just to the south, across an alley.
It is somewhat incongruous for a couple of reasons:
1. El Reno is home to many notable murals, a number already waymarked. Almost all of those, however, deal with the history of the area; this one is a Mexican street scene.
2. The building is obviously an abandoned restaurant. According to DeLorme, it used to be known as Big D's Bbq. What's left of the signs on the front make no mention of any Mexican food either. Have no idea why a Mexican scene ended up there. (EDIT - A Google Circle friend says that the Delgado family had a Mexican restaurant here for years. The mystery is solved!)
The colors on the mural are still quite vibrant as the close-up shows, but overall it is starting to look worn.
It is well worth enlarging the photo to look at all the details:
Street musicians are playing and dancing in front of the "Salon de Fiestas on the left front of the mural.
"Susanna's Tienda de Ropas" (Susan's Clothing Store) is shown on the front right.
From there, the street goes past the fountain and down the street to the plaza end where the Catholic Church can be seen.
There is also a donkey in the scene, but I have no idea what it's doing on the sidewalk.
It is also interesting to compare the photo to the Google Map StreetView picture of the building. In the waymark photo, the key scrollwork at the top of the building goes around part of the front. In the Google view, there is a sign where the scrollwork now appears. Can't tell if the scrollwork was behind the sign or if it was added later.
Unfortunately, the mural contains neither date nor attribution to the painter.
