The church was founded in 1809 by Rev. Royal Phelps after the Congregational Order. It was the first church organized in Batavia. The first church building was not actually built until 1824, until then services were held in the Court House. In 1817 the first regular
Pastor was Rev. Ephriam Chapin and the church was then organized as Presbyterian. The site of the present church was not purchased until 1853. At this time, there were about 200 church members. This church was initially built in 1855, though the tower was not built until a year later. The present bell was installed in 1886 and has recently been restored, as it is one of the oldest in the area.
