When spun properly by someone, this sculpture reminds the viewer of a zipper going up or down. The two sides rotate separately to give that impression, and the whole piece can be spun on its central axis.
"Zipper" was created by Calgary sculptor Katie Ohe and installed here in 1975. It is at the University of Calgary, in the main inside foyer of the Science Theatres building; the GPS coordinates are those of the nearest entrance.
The Zipper has been the focus of two pranks by University of Calgary engineering students. One year, the engineers decided to take it apart - only to find that they couldn't put it back together again. The artist, a local resident, had to reassemble it.
