The first church built on the spot where now stands the village church was the St. Michael or Prancratiuskerk. That was around the year 1200. Much of the current Leiden at that time belonged to ecclesiastical Leiderdorp. The Highland church (Hooglandse Kerk), which also was called Pancras Church, was a Dependence of the former Leiderdorpse church.

In 1470 in the dungeon of the tower of the church, the English King Edward IV was locked up for a night.
During the siege of Leiden in 1574 the church was destroyed by the Spaniards, having been used for the stationing of their soldiers and as a horse stable. In 1620 it was rebuilt to the church that still stands today. The reconstruction was done by the "reformers" in the 16th century after the Reformation the "Catholic Leiderdorp" had been reached. The original building was rectangular with a high window in the west and east facade. The high window can now only be seen in the east wall, because in 1781 an organ was built by J.J. Mitterreither. In 1846, at the entrance porch a tower was build and during the major restoration carried out in the years 1965 to 1970 it was demolished again 1965. Inside are two walls standing at the banks, both from the year 1687: the government bank at the north facade and the porch bench against the east wall. During the restoration the original pulpit has been replaced by a pulpit with baptistery-screen from the 17th century from the Church of Opmeer in Noord-Holland. The lighting in the church has successively included candlelight, oil lamps, gas lamps and electric lamps. In the church floor you will find gravestones from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The cemetery behind the church is no longer in use.
