This bronze statue on a stone plinth is sited in the garden of Rochester
Cathedral and was commissioned in 1981, the work of the sculptor John Doubleday.
It is entitled, 'Mary and Child Jesus', reflecting the present day dedication of
the Cathedral to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Christians traditionally believe that Jesus of Nazareth, or Jesus Christ, or
simply Jesus, was born of the virgin Mary,
performed miracles, founded the Church, died sacrificially by crucifixion to
achieve atonement, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, from which he
will return. the majority of Christians worship Jesus as the incarnation of God
the Son, and the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Most Christian scholars
today present Jesus as the awaited Messiah promised in the Old Testament and as
God, arguing that he fulfilled many Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament.

Mary, variously called Saint Mary, Mother Mary, the Virgin Mary, the Blessed
Virgin Mary, Mary, Mother of God and, in Islam, as Maryam, mother of 'Isa', was
a Jewish woman from Nazareth in Galilee who lived in the late 1st century BC and
early 1st century AD, and is considered by Christians to be the first proselyte
to Christianity. She is identified in the New Testament and in the Quar'an as
the mother of Jesus through divine intervention. Christians believe that she
conceived her son miraculously by the agency of the Holy Spirit. Muslims believe
she conceived by the command of God. ( wikipedia
