JG Marshall owned the Monk Coniston estate and laid out the gardens in Victorian times. He created Tarn Hows as well. In 1930s Beatrix Potter bought the estate for the National Trust, who repaid half with money from benefactors. On her death, all her property was handed over to the National Trust.
The grounds became overgrown, and the planted trees grew unrestricted.

To find this wonderful tree it is on the permissive path from the walled garden northwards through the grounds.

Parking is possible beside the main house, if there is room. Otherwise drive up the sloping track to a disabled parking place very near this tree.
