This type of windmill is typical of those found on farms throughout the American mid-west. The Aermotor company has been building windmills since 1888. These types of windmills are designed to utilize wind power to operate a pump below. Although there is a hand pump at the base of this windmill, there is no apparent pumping mechanism or crankshaft. Therefore, I believe the windmill has nothing to do with the pump itself.
