This magnificent sculpture is visible from quite a distance along Mokpo's water front. The parking area is accessible only from the east, however. From there one ascends stairs about a hundred feet up to the base of the sculpture.
The sculpture begins with three legs space about 15 (5m) apart with vertically arranged slabs of granite, tapering up to a narrow middle where the bronze figures are mounted, then expanding slightly to hold the stylized flame and then flaring above it. The different colors of the stone give an additional dramatic effect to it. At the base is also a clear half dome, which probably also serves as a skylight to the museum area beneath the sculpture. (The rooms were not open at the time of this visit). The entire sculpture towers to approximately 40 feet (14m).
