The theatre is an impressive building designed by Irwin and Chester and was built in Classical style with fluted Corinthian columns.

It remained in active use as a theatre until 1921. Since that date it has been used as a cinema, bingo hall and now is a night club.

Throughout all these changes the statue has remained standing in the niche above the main entrance.

The building became an English Heritage Grade II Listed Building in 1974. (visit link)
