This marker is dedicated to the
Battery I, 2nd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery and is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The battery was organized at Camp Butler near Springfield, Illinois and mustered in for a three year enlistment on December 31, 1861.
It marks their location on Friday September 18, 1863 at 6:00 p.m. until Saturday, September 19, 1863 at 7:00 a.m.
The commander of the battery was Captain Charles M. Barnett.

Short Physical Description
2'6" x 1'2" x 2'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. "Illinois" is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position from 6:00 p.m. on 9/18/63 to 7:00 a.m. on 9/19/63.
