The Atlas Assurance company which was originally founded in London, bought out the Manchester Assurance company in 1904.
This building is in the main financial district of Manchester on King Street, and the Atlas statue is an obvious choice of advertising for the company.
It is an English Heritage Grade II listed building and was designed by Fairhurst and Michael Waterhouse. It was erected in 1929 adjoining another Grade II listed building that was erected in 1927.

Michael Waterhouse was the grandson of a famous architect Alfred Waterhouse who amongst other things designed the London Offices of Atlas Assurance. Coincidentally this was also on King Street. It was spotted by Master Mariner and posted on 16th June 2011.

Unlike the stone statue of Atlas in London this one is made of bronze and Atlas is carrying a golden globe on his shoulders.
