The text on the plaque reads as follows:
In 1807, Ezekiel Hart, a member of a prominent family, became the first Jew ever elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada. Despite his victory, this brilliant businessman could not take his seat in the Assembly, highlighting the limited political rights of Jews at the time. A debate on Jewish political emancipation ensued, which Hart's sons, Samuel Becancour and Aaron Ezekiel, helped bring to a successful conclusion. Petitions they submitted in 1828 and 1831 led to the passage in 1832 of an act granting civil and political rights to Jews in Lower Canada.
