This stylised metal tree sculpture was erected in 2005 as a memorial to the civilians of Manchester who died during the Second World War.

"The Tree of Remembrance replaced a real tree in Piccadilly Gardens in a project involving the Valuing Older People group for the 60th anniversary of VE day. The design was intended to provide a shelter and contemplative space for remembrance and reflection". (

The sculpture his 11 metres high and has a bronze trunk and stainless steel leaf canopy. The trunk has the names of the dead inscribed on it. It was created by Wolfgang Heron, a partnership of Wolfgang Buttress a sculptor and Fiona Heron an ex landscape designer.
Wolfgang Buttress is a sculptor who specialises in metal sculptures that represent things from nature.
