Accédant aux désirs du parlement canadien, le parlement britannique, en 1849, abrogea les lois maritimes qui empèchaient les navires étrangers de transporter passagers et marchandises dans les ports du Canada. Depuis le premier janvier 1850, le commerce international est libre sur le Saint-Laurent.
The text on the plaque reads as follows:
Complying with the request of the Parliament of Canada, the British Parliament, in 1849, repealed the Navigation Laws that prevented foreign ships from bringing passengers and goods into Canadian ports. Since 1st January, 1850, the Saint Lawrence has been opened to all nations.
