The settlement of Ewelle was recorded in
Saxon history, but came to prominence in 1163 when King Henry II granted the
manor of Ewell to the Knights Templar's for service to the King during the
Crusades, hence the prefix of Temple, 'once owned by Templar's'.
The village sign therefore depicts a Templar cross framing the local wildlife,
representing the Lydden and Temple Ewell Downs National Nature Reserve, the
church of St Peters & St Paul's, erected by the Templar's in 1170, and the
surviving village (non working) watermill.
