The photo is taken from a position approximately 20 metres west of the bridge.
The bridge is a brick construction arch bridge that carries the railway over a road. The rails, that are still in use, connect Blackfriars and Elephant and Castle stations. This bridge is rather interesting in construction. The west side of the bridge, where the main photo was taken, shows the bridge as an arch bridge. From the eastern side the bridge looks different (see photos). The arch can be seen but it appears that the bridge has been extended a few metres to the east, probably to allow another track. Part of the bridge can be seen hanging over the road.
Arch bridges, due to their constructed shape, do not have a consistent clearance above the road from one side to the other. This means that large road vehicles may sometimes hit the bridge. In the event of that happening, there is a notice attached to the bridge, giving a phone number and bridge identification. This enables the unlucky road user to advise the rail network of his mishap.
The notice, for this bridge, reads:
"This is bridge 406 HHH
