The Midland Hotel was built by The Midland Railway Company as a railway hotel in 1903 to serve the nearby Central Railway Station.

The left hand and right hand lions have the letters MR on the shields standing for Midland Railway.

One of the other lions has the coat of arms of Manchester on its shield and the final one has the coat of arms of the Midland Railway Company.
