This sculpture was placed in 1996 as part of an urban regeneration scheme and forms the centre piece of Barbirolli Square outside the Bridgewater Hall.

It is a large piece of Italian marble that has a smooth polished surface. The sculptor Kan Yusada says that the word “Ishinki” means a form returning to itself.
The main focus of the regeneration scheme was the building of Bridgewater Hall, a large modern concert hall. The sculpture stands near to the entrance of the hall next to some steps leading down to a canal basin that was placed as a water front to the building.
The stone cost £200,000 at the time of installation and was quite controversial as people thought that it was a huge amount of money for a giant pebble, even if it does weigh 18 tonnes.
However as the second part of the title implies the sculpture is very tactile and few people who walk past it can resist touching it.
In order to keep it attractive it is coated with an ant-graffiti coating.
Kan Yusada was born in Japan, but lives and works in Italy. He has made many similar pieces of art work of large polished pieces of marble.
