First Church of the Nazarene
456 Brown St.
Portsmouth, Ohio

As the original Church of the Nazarene in this river port community, Portsmouth First Church of the Nazarene sponsored other churches in the area. In 1930, they launched a Church of the Nazarene in Sciotoville (now officially incorporated into the town of Portsmouth) and there is another Church of the Nazarene in the Rosemont area of Portsmouth.

The building has recently undergone some renovations, but the existing brick structure maintains its original appearance, with its beautiful stained glass windows. New educational units have also been added, but blend in well with the original building.

Portsmouth is a historic town on the banks of the Ohio River at the terminus of the Ohio-Erie Canal. The canal is gone, and much of the steel industry that also spurred its growth is gone, but Portsmouth still occupies an important geographic location and is the seat for Scioto County. In addition to its many historical sites, such as the Boneyfiddle historic district, it is home to Shawnee State College.
