This memorial is located on 5th Street, between Walnut Street and Broad Street in Alexandria, SD, about 12 miles east of Mitchell, SD, on Interstate 90.
It is the county seat of Hanson County and has a population of 615 as of the 2010 census.
Alexandria's post office was established in 1880, and the city later incorporated in 1885. The city was named for railroad president Alexander Mitchell.

Description of Memorial: The memorial is located on the south side of the Courthouse on 5th Street.
It is a granite slab sitting on top of a brick wall with sidewalk coming up to the memorial.
There are seven flag poles gracing the monument, the US Flag, the flags from the 5 branches of service, and a POW/MIA flag.
The US Flag is lit at night and a antique street light pole is nearby.
