Located in McCook County on SD Highway 262, Bridgewater has a population of 550 as of July 2009, a 10% decrease in population from the 2000 census.

The area was settled by German, Irish, Norwegian, Dutch, and English immigrants and the town was incorporated on June 24, 1889.

History claims the town was named by railroad workers who had to carry drinking water across a bridge.

Also, the town is the birthplace of Sparky Anderson, major league baseball coach.
