This monument to the 38th Indiana Infantry Regiment is located on the west side of Battleline Rd near tour stop 2 at the Chickamauga National Military Park. This monument marks the position held by the 38th on Sunday Sept. 20, 1863.

This monument to the 38th Regiment Indiana Infantry is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The regiment was organized organized at New Albany, Indiana and mustered into Federal Service on September 18, 1861. This monument marks the position held by the 38th Indiana Infantry regiment from daylight on Sunday morning, September 20th until it was ordered to retire at 5:30 P.M. This is one of two marker to the 38th Indiana Infantry on the battlefield.

This regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel F. Griffin commanding, was
One of the first in Baird’s Division to engage the enemy Saturday Morning
September 19th, 1863. It also assisted in withstanding the attack of Cleburne’s Division at night.

This monument marks the position held by the regiment from daylight
Sunday morning, September 20th until ordered to retire at 5:30 P.M.
During the day several assaults of the enemy were repulsed.
Killed 13; Wounded 57; Missing 39.

Short Significance Description:

The marker contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description

9' x 6' x 14' high, monument has rock-faced base & smooth-faced pedestal. Shaft takes form of blind arch with rock-faced voussoirs surrounding smooth-faced panel containing inscription & state seal. Carved acorn in keystone.



Long Physical Description

Monument located within the Chickamauga Battlefield at map site #57 along Battleline Road.
