The complex was built before 781 AD during the Hindu period of Champa. It is named after a goddess who takes the form of Uma, wife of Siva.

Out of the four towers remaining from the original ten, the most impressive is the northern tower which is 75ft high. The lotus-petal motifs and the Shiva figure over the door are original while other sections have been heavily restored.

Despite its Hindu origins, Po Nagar is now used by Vietnamese Buddhists who have dressed the goddess in Buddhist robes.
