These two lions are in the outer corners of the courtyard of the Thien Hau Pagoda, of Ho Chi Minh City. They are Chinese themed lions, which is not surprising, as this is the Chinese area of HCMC. The pagoda is dedicated to the god Thien Hau, which is the southern Chinese form of the name of the god Mazu. Mazu is the god who protects fishermen and sailors, and is invoked as the patron deity of many Southern Chinese and East Asian persons.
The lions are only visible from inside the temple, surrounded by lots of people and parked motorbikes. I happened to visit on a festival day, and the place was crowded. Even though the locals were courteous enough, getting out of my way when they saw me trying to photograph their lions, I could not get good shots of either.
The temple is worth a look.
