On the night of July 5, 1943, Boise City, Oklahoma became the only city in continental United States bombed during World War II. A B-17 Flying Fortress on a training flight became disoriented and then the pilots confused the lit up square around the courthouse as their intended target. To make matter worse even though bomb was launch toward the courthouse but missed and hit a garage instead. The bomb dropped was a training bomb and no one was injured. The pilot and crew were invited to an event 50 years after the bombing but all declined.
Across the street from the courthouse near a caboose used by the Chamber of Commerce is this replica crater and bomb along with marker.
