It is a hard standing area outside the town hall with public seating on the perimeter of the square. It is often used as a meeting area.

The city hall is a fine example of a Victorian civic building from a time there was great rivalry between towns and cities to show how prosperous they had become since the industrial revolution.

In 2006 the square was extended and a number of bars and restaurants added with outside seating. This new building also included a photographic museum with an outside mounted large screen TV for public display.

Occasionally exhibitions, continental markets and concerts are held in the square.

The waymark co-ordinates are taken from an entrance at the side of the Town on Channing Way. At this point is a marker naming the square and indicating it was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 27th March 1997.
