The interpretive historic sign outside what is now known as Nick Tahou's supplies the "then" photograph - except that it is an 1885 engraving, not a photograph. I supplied the "now" picture.

The Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad was an important part of Rochester's development as an industrial center. The railroads competed with the canal on East-West routes, but connecting Upstate cities to regions to the south could only be accomplished by rail.
