Text:
Fourth Battery, Indiana Light Artillery.
Two Napoleons, 2 12 Pdr. Howitzers, 2 James Rifles.
Starkweather’s Brigade, Baird’s Division, Thomas’ Corps.
September 20, 1863.
2D Lieut. Henry J. Willits, Commanding.
2D Lieut. Willis H. Pettit.
The battery came into position on this line at 3 A.M. with two guns in the center of brigade, two guns on the left and two guns in reserve, and hastily constructed barricades. While holding this position the line was subjected to repeated assaults by the enemy until afternoon. The battery changed position as circumstances require, firing to the East, North East, and North, and rendered effective service in repulsing assaults on the left of the line by an enfilade and rear fire. As the guns, limbers and caissons were disabled by the fire of the enemy, the portions disabled were replaced from the two guns unused, thus keeping four guns in action. The battery remained in position till ordered to retire late in the afternoon, having only three rounds of canister, and retiring under a bayonet charge of the enemy supported by his batteries. Casualties of the day: 8 men wounded and 4 missing.
The axle-trees up to James rifles were broken and one gun disabled. One 6 Pdr. smoothbore confederate gun brought off. Total casualties: 1 officer wounded and captured; 1 enlisted man killed; 16 wounded and 4 missing; lost 1 James rifles; 2 gun carriages; 3 caissons; 34 horses.
