This plaque is attached to the wall of the Montgomery, Alabama, city hall, telling us that the city was founded by Andre Dexter.

After a fire destroyed the old city hall, a new one was built using WPA funding. The cornerstone was laid in 1936 and the building opened in 1937. On the North Perry Street side, they included a city auditorium. This plaque is located near the entrance. There is no indication as to when it was put up.
Andrew Dexter was born March 28, 1779 in Brookfield, Massachusetts, and died in Mobile, Alabama, on November 2, 1837. He founded New Philadelphia along the Alabama River, and later merged it with another city to form Montgomery. More information on Andrew Dexter can be found at (
