The Main Library in Montgomery is named for Julette Hampton Morgan, a librarian in the 1950s who publicly supported the Civil Rights Movement. This is not the first building for the public library, which traces its roots to a subscription service in a room above a drug store on Dexter Avenue beginning on June 19, 1899. In 1904, the Carnegie Library opened. This was the home of the main library until 1960, when a new facility was opened combining both the main library and the Museum of Fine Arts. In 1991, the Museum moved to its own building, and the main library took over the entire space. source: (
