Per the NRHP application (secondary link below):
"The Pitts Theatre is an example of an Art Deco theatre erected during the height of theatre construction in the
mid-20th century. Erected in 1937-1938, it was part of a chain of motion picture theatres under the ownership of the Pitts Amusement Company. The building is reflective of the development of motion picture theatres in the United States during the first half of the 20th century."
The building is currently undergoing extensive renovation to convert it to a cultural center. See also State Theatre Foundation website. Timeline for completion was not found, but probably another year out. The project also includes construction of other commercial space filling the adjacent parking lot.
