An NPS sign is posted on a tree at an eastern border of the Chancellorsville Battlefield in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The sign is faded but it marks the boundary line of the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park and issues the admonition that this is a protected area. Unfortunately, an outlaw tree with seemingly no respect for federal law appears to have taken offense with the intrusion and is slowly devouring the sign.

So... is the tree culpable for destruction of federal property or is it exempt because it is protected? If so, who protects the sign?
